Amidst that NFL controversy of protesting during the National Anthem, contract negotiations are also a focus in the NFL right now. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has reportedly requested $49.5 million per year as well as lifetime use of a private jet during the contract negotiations with the NFL.
Goodell’s contract is reportedly undergoing an approval process as he has asked the league’s compensation committee in August to raise his salary from $30 million to $49.5 million per year, ESPN reported on Sunday.
Also on his request list is lifetime use of a private jet and lifetime health insurance for his family.
Fox News reports that the commissioner is currently in strife with Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who has threatened to sue the NFL if negotiations regarding Goodell’s contract extension are finalized without approval from all NFL team owners.
ESPN reports that one unnamed NFL owner said “several owners in this league who don’t make $40 million a year.” adding: “That number for Roger just seems too much. It’s offensive. It’s unseemly.”
Goodell has been in the headlines over the last couple of months for the way that he has been handling the NFL protests during the National Anthem.
What he did say last month was “we want our players to stand” during the anthem, yet did not provide the actual rules or limitations to it.
An owner in the NFL made it clear that the problem in the NFL right now is that football is not the discussion anymore, that instead the focus of NFL is :“It’s about concussions, Jones vs. Goodell, [Ezekiel Elliott’s suspension], the anthem. No one is talking about football. It’s just killing the game,” the owner told ESPN.
What do you think? Does Goodell deserve the raise and other requests of his contract?
